I gotta go back and look at my Paulo Freire material, but it seems to me that it is about sending people into meaningless metaphysical thought & activities. Of course, not all metaphysical thought is meaningless, but this type obviously is.
In general, I like to think of "The Cube" movie trilogy when I think of these types of techniques, as this movie really showed, metaphorically, how society is setup with a myriad of traps built-in. This seems to me to be just another set of traps that keeps people occupied in meaningless pursuits.

I think there is a lot of truth in that. We should also recognize the dialectical counter effect of magical thinking which is just as detrimental to society, that is the ultra orthodox skepticism of radical materialism put forward by individuals like Bertrand Russel or Richard Dawkins.
There have been many warnings throughout the history of culture regarding the dangers of runaway scientism or creating a society that is governed and directed solely and exclusively by pure rationalism.

Ah ha... I didn't see this dialectic between radical materialism and magical thinking. This is obviously deliberate... interesting.
