The world's biggest electronics company has issued an extraordinary health warning about the dangers of watching 3D television.

Pregnant women, the elderly, children and those suffering from serious medical conditions are among a wide range of people said to be at risk.

The alert extends to those who have been sleep deprived or drinking. It highlights alarming side effects such as confusion, nausea, convulsions, altered vision, light-headedness, dizziness, and involuntary movements such as eye or muscle twitching and cramps.

The world's biggest electronics company has issued an extraordinary health warning about the dangers of watching 3D television

Samsung says there are also concerns that those with epilepsy could be at risk of fits - as they are from strobe lighting and photographers' flashes on normal television.
Watching 3D on TV, which involves wearing special glasses like those used for 3D movies, bombards the eyes and brain with a succession of flashing images that appear for a fraction of a second.

It is a new way of seeing things and so puts unusual strain on the body.

The warning has been posted on a Samsung website and appears designed to protect the manufacturer from any legal claims for compensation if people fall ill.

However, the language could seriously damage the launch of 3D, which is being pushed heavily by manufacturers and broadcasters as a breakthrough.

One internet blogger wrote: 'I'm happy . . . this will kill 3D-TV.' However, one cynic responded saying: 'I wonder if I should put a patch on one eye so I don't see anything 3D.'

Samsung's 3D sets are going into stores in the next few days with a starting price around £1,300, while Sony's TVs will go on sale in June.

Other manufacturers say they have studied the health effects of 3D viewing and have decided it is safe to go ahead.

Sky is currently promoting its 3D coverage of premier league football in pubs. The technology is being driven by a raft of 3D blockbuster films such as Avatar and Alice in Wonderland.

Samsung, based in South Korea, has been the biggest-selling technology brand in the world since 2005.
A spokesman said the warning had been issued because 'watching 3D-TV is an entirely new experience-for people' and there are concerns that it is so exciting and immersible.

Feeling dizzy after watching the set, for instance, would be particularly harmful if it happened to pregnant women or the elderly.

One part of the warning reads: 'Viewing in 3D may cause disorientation for some viewers. Accordingly, DO NOT place your TV television near open stairwells, cables, balconies, or other objects that can be tripped over, run into, knocked down, broken or fallen over.'

Another part says: 'Viewing 3D television may also cause motion sickness, perceptual after effects, disorientation, eye strain and decreased postural stability.'

And it advises those with epilepsy, or a family history of epilepsy and strokes, to take medical advice before watching.
However, the spokesman said the company is reviewing the language used in the warning on the basis it may cause 'unintended alarm'.

A spokesman for Sony said the company had commissioned independent research into the technology and had found no health risks.

There's nothing special about 3D-TVs. They are merely normal LCD TVs with a transmitter which talks to the glasses. Instead of new TVs, manufacturers could have released transmitters for the glasses, but they didn't because the whole point of 3D-TV is to sell more TVs!

So, my question would then be what effect does the frequency patterns, of the glasses, have on the brain and the way it processes information. My guess is that the glasses help defeat the frontal-cortex's ability to process information. But just a guess.

Thanks for the info, but I wouldn't trust this technology for a moment, and imo anyone who would risk having ELF/electromagnetic waves anywhere near their brain....needs to have their brain examined. <g> I would consider that the psychopaths who wish to rule us WOULD NOT announce that their new glasses will--ahem--"have an interesting effect on your mind". Also, I recall that folks in the Avatar audience reported some very unpleasant side effects (strange longings to leave this Earth), and *seem to have been impelled* to see the move OVER and OVER again. Hmmmmm.. Exclamation

StuckInALegChair,
Thought you would find this interesting---
RE our previous discussion, here's some information that appears to be very relevant to those perhaps-not-so-innocent HDTV glasses:
============================
Morality is Modified in the Lab

Scientists have shown they can change people's moral judgements by disrupting a specific area of the brain with magnetic pulses. They identified a region of the brain just above and behind the right ear which appears to control morality.
And by using magnetic pulses to block cell activity they impaired volunteers' notion of right and wrong.

The small Massachusetts Institute of Technology study appears in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

To be able to apply a magnetic field to a specific brain region and change people's moral judgments is really astonishing
Dr Liane Young Massachusetts Institute of Technology Lead researcher

Dr Liane Young said: "You think of morality as being a really high-level behaviour.
"To be able to apply a magnetic field to a specific brain region and change people's moral judgments is really astonishing."
The key area of the brain is a knot of nerve cells known as the right temporo-parietal junction (RTPJ).

The researchers subjected 20 volunteers to a number of tests designed to assess their notions of right and wrong.

In one scenario participants were asked how acceptable it was for a man to let his girlfriend walk across a bridge he knew to be unsafe.

After receiving a 500 millisecond magnetic pulse to the scalp, the volunteers delivered verdicts based on outcome rather than moral principle.

If the girlfriend made it across the bridge safely, her boyfriend was not seen as having done anything wrong.

In effect, they were unable to make moral judgments that require an understanding of other people's intentions.

Previous work has shown the RTPJ to be highly active when people think about the thoughts and beliefs of others.

Electric currents

The MIT team pinpointed the region in volunteers using a sophisticated functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) brain scan.

They then targeted the area using a technique called transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to create weak electric currents that temporarily stop brain cells working normally.

In one test, volunteers were exposed to TMS for 25 minutes before reading stories involving morally questionable characters, and being asked to judge their actions.

In a second experiment, volunteers were subjected to a much shorter 500 millisecond TMS burst while being asked to make a moral judgement.

In both cases, the researchers found that when the RTPJ was disrupted volunteers were more likely to judge actions solely on the basis of whether they caused harm - not whether they were morally wrong in themselves.

Morally dubious acts with a "happy" ending were often deemed acceptable.

Sarah-Jayne Blakemore, a brain expert at University College London, said the findings were insightful.

"The study suggests that this region - the RTPJ - is necessary for moral reasoning.

"What is interesting is that this is a region that is very late developing - into adolescence and beyond right into the 20s.

"The next step would be to look at how or whether moral development changes through childhood into adulthood."

Interesting, Explorer. Thanks for posting.

Makes me think of the 3D shooter computer video games and how the military uses versions of them to train troops with. Who knows what kind of nefarious crap they can hide in the code...?

What I meant is the transmitters are in the TV and from the TVs I have seen in shops they use infrared not RF. The cirtuitry in the glasses doesn't contain any electromagnets or anything that is designed to emit RF, so nothing is being emitted into your brain.

The shutters operate at 60 Hz each eye which is well beyond what your eyes can notice.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquid_crystal_shutter_glasses
However this is not the technology used in cinemas. They use polarized light http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RealD_3D

People get nautious because the director has made scenes which involve a lot of movement. This confuses their brain because the eyes see movement while the inner ear detects nothing. Avatar is not unique in making people nautious.

That said, I find your article interesting. I can see how it is relevant to mobile phones.

Interesting; this seems to be a definite negative against the 3D "experience" - I didn't realize that could occur.

I was also struck by the applicability to cell phones -- a very disturbing piece of news...I wish this information was A LOT more widely known!

Because the Technocrats have acquired such a high degree of proficiency with creating "hostile" electronics, I've taken a pretty extreme position with regard to any use of them. I would rather err on the side of caution than risk falling victim to one or the other of their devious inventions. They are so dedicated to developing ever darker and more deadly weapons against us that I've decided this is the wisest course.

The "Avatar" reactions I was referring to were that many many people reported feeling deeply depressed, with a longing to "go to (the Alien planet)" permanently. As I also indicated, people were going back to see the movie over and over again, and I just wonder if that wasn't due to some covert suggestion, via the afore-mentioned 3D glasses.

As far as the glasses, I would ask: how do you know there's nothing worrisome about them? If there were, I imagine it'd be pretty darn well hidden. Just something I personally would be wary about...but hey I'm a conspiracy theorist....and the glasses might be perfectly innocent. Cool Smile

How do you know there is something worrisome in them? The technique used in cinemas is different to that used in 3D TV and if you have a look at the cinemas' glasses there is no where to hide anything. I'm pretty sure many people have taken apart TV glasses out of curiosity, so if there was something hidden we would hear about it.

I'm not ruling out that there is something sinister about Avatar, but it would be caused by cinematographic techniques, not the use of 3D technologies.

As to mobile phones, I try to use mine as little as possible for a number of reasons.

Without knowing the health risks, or really even trusting the "experts" if I did, I am already really skeptical of how sitting in front of a 3d TV for hours of at a time would effect someone. It seems like it would only be more memorizing and alienating, separating the consciousness from reality, and making people even more zombie like than they are now. So as a "recovering" techno geek I can definitely see the appeal and temptation of the 3d TV but it is not something I want to like or get accustomed to.

Kind of like a mouse trap, ooh that cheese or peanut butter looks so good but wait til the trap snaps and it wont be. LOL. Being an IT worker I find myself becoming more of a luddite everyday. Does it really make things easier? All I hear at work is people bitch and complain about the SYSTEM not working correctly, and they have reason to, there are always all kinds of glitches or hangs. So their work in life is stressful and also making mine more stressful. Anyways...

Yep, that's a pretty good description of what it could do.

Moreover, you might be amazed to hear about what the mad scientists have devised for the unwary TV viewer (and especially now with the new HDTV sets) ... if I remember correctly, and I'll look for the links, they now have the power to actually kill someone by way of his TV. And at a lesser level, they definitely have the power to utilize various 'flicker rates' and 'flashing chroma-lights' effects to create states of depression, fear, panic, nausea, etc.

I'll have to find the URLs - and will post them later. [SEE BELOW] Alan Watt, btw, has talked about this technology on many of his shows, if you've ever listened to him...but be careful, for he is Not a cheerful person. Shocked

Later.
