| "Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it, no matter if I have said it, But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it." - Buddha | |

| just out of curiosity, did you modify that thoreau quote intentionally? i've always said stems and buds when wanting to take it further, but branches is in the original.

"There are a thousand hacking at the branches of evil to the one who is striking at the root." Henry David Thoreau I did not modify the quote intentionally. Now you have me thinking, however, where did I get this quote originally - I do not recall right now. Do you recall where you got your version of the quote? I'm curious now about confirming the accuracy of either version. _________________ "For every thousand hacking at the leaves of evil, there is one striking at the root."David Thoreau (1817-1862) anonymously email me by clicking here

| i double checked my version of walden and mine misquotes by adding the word "the" near the end. also, the quote is followed by the following: "..., and it may be that he who bestows the largest amount of time and money on the needy is doing the most by his mode of life to produce that misery which he strives in vain to relieve."
Again, that's in thoreau's walden, early in the philanthropy section.

| Well, the last half of the sentence certainly changes things, and is totally inconsistent with the first half of the quote. I wonder if the quote has been modified from the original. How old is the publication that you have? _________________ "For every thousand hacking at the leaves of evil, there is one striking at the root."David Thoreau (1817-1862) anonymously email me by clicking here | |

| i had wondered the same thing. mine's about 5-7 years old. but the quote is in context there, though still may have been added subsequent to 1854, or whenever he wrote walden. | |
